An hour from Brisbane, 40 minutes from the Gold Coast, and somehow a world away from both, Mt Tamborine has a way of making a regular weekend feel like a proper escape. Ancient volcanic plateau, World Heritage-listed rainforest, waterfalls, cellar doors, gin distilleries and restaurants that would hold their own in any capital city. Here’s how to spend a weekend on the mountain doing it properly.

What to See & Do in Mount Tamborine

Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk: This is the one everyone comes for, and it earns the hype. A 1.5km loop of elevated walkways carries you through the rainforest canopy and across a 40-metre cantilever bridge suspended 30 metres above Cedar Creek, the kind of view that stops conversation mid-sentence. Allow 45 minutes and go early before the tour groups arrive.

Mount Tamborine Waterfalls: Curtis Falls is the locals’ pick; a short walk through sunlit rainforest to a stunning waterfall framed by ancient basalt columns. Swimming isn’t permitted here (the platypus and glow worms called it first), but the viewing platform gets you close enough to feel the spray. For a swim, head to Cedar Creek Falls: a 900-metre walk from the car park leads to three rock pools, the only swimming holes on the mountain, with the first 500 metres flat and pram-friendly. If you want to earn your lunch, the Witches Falls circuit (3.6km) is a proper bush walk with rewarding views throughout.

Gallery Walk: The mountain’s main street, and the easiest place to lose an hour without trying. Boutiques, art galleries and providores sit alongside shops selling locally made fudge, award-winning cheese, mountain-grown coffee and handcrafted ceramics. Stock up here before heading to Knoll Road Lookout for a sunset picnic.

Markets Mount Tamborine: Every Sunday at the Showgrounds: fresh local produce, artisan goods, handmade crafts and the unhurried pace of a mountain morning. If your weekend includes a Sunday, build your day around it.

Wineries, Distilleries & the Glow Worm Tour: The mountain is one of Queensland’s best drink trails, with wineries, breweries and distilleries worth making time for. Witches Falls Winery is the obvious starting point; Cauldron Distillery is where the gin lovers disappear. Save one evening for the Glow Worm Night Tour to Curtis Falls; thousands of bioluminescent larvae lighting up the rainforest ceiling are one of those Mount Tamborine things to do that sound gimmicky and turn out to be genuinely magical.

What to Eat: The Best Restaurants Mount Tamborine

All that fresh mountain air works up an appetite. Fortunately, the best restaurants Mount Tamborine has to offer are well worth planning your day around, from estate dining rooms with Gold Coast views to intimate rainforest retreats and a French charmer with 200-year-old oak trees out front. Here are the ones worth booking.

  • Cedar Creek Estate Restaurant

    104/144 Hartley Road, North Tamborine

The Gazebo, the Veranda, the Deck, wherever you sit at Cedar Creek Estate Restaurant, the view of the estate gardens and surrounding hinterland is reason enough to book. The Modern Australian menu leans into estate wines and local produce. In winter, the Hamblin Room, with its log fire and hearty soups, is the exact definition of a good Saturday lunch. One of the best Mount Tamborine restaurants for groups.

  • Pippin Took

    21-23 Southport Avenue, Tamborine Mountain

Thirty seats, a courtyard firepit, 200-year-old oak trees overhead and a menu with genuine French soul, Pippin Took is the kind of find that gets passed around between people who know. Chef Ross Howell ran a beloved Brisbane restaurant for 12 years before decamping to the hinterland, and the cooking reflects it. Unhurried, considered, and exactly the right way to end a weekend on the mountain.

Ready for your Mount Tamborine getaway?

About an hour from Brisbane and 40 minutes from Surfers Paradise. The mountain is best explored by car, across the villages of North Tamborine, Eagle Heights and Tamborine Mountain.

  • Hickory Slow

1 Main St and, Main Western Rd, Tamborine Mountain

Hickory is unapologetically about the meat. Slow-smoked, fire-cooked, served in quantities that make you reassess your plans for the rest of the afternoon. The signature platter, smoked brisket, pork ribs, beef ribs, chicken wings, fries, rainbow slaw, and fried pickles, is the dish that built the reputation, and it holds up.
