PROFILE BY BEST RESTAURANTS
The Rocks has a lot going for it – its location, first of all. From the upstairs deck and restaurant, the views over Schnapper Point and Port Phillip Bay capture sea, yachts and bathing boxes and are endlessly pleasing, whatever the time of day or season. Then there are the opening hours – all day, every day, from breakfast onwards, for lunch, dinner, snacks, coffee or a glass of wine. The only exception is Sunday night in winter. Then there's the look of the place, which is open, easy-going and fresh, like an exceptionally well-designed beach-house. There are two eating areas; the dining room and the covered deck, which has the benefit of heating for those frosty nights.
Menu-wise, the emphasis is placed on sustainable seafood dishes served at their peak. Oysters are kept in tanks and opened to order, and look out for the Port Phillip Bay snapper which comes with clams, mussels and scallops and a bubbly seafood foam. Other highlights include the seafood paella, juicy steaks, wild barramundi and a couple of enterprising vegetarian options. The waiters are helpful and good-natured, even during the summer feeding frenzy. The drinks list is well chosen and includes a number of quality wines and even a beer from the Mornington Peninsula.
