With views of the Yarra River and the city skyline, the cutting edge design and decor of this restaurant and bar is truly innovative. Together, the rich textures, jewel-like colours and eclectic lighting scheme combine to create a tour de force that has become the place to be seen on the bustling Southbank strip. The private dining room boasts stunning views and is perfect for hosting corporate meetings, conferences and private functions.

A recent addition to the Southbank precinct, The Meat and Wine Co. is a collaboration between two of South Africa's most successful restaurateurs, Costa Tomazos and Bradley Michael. With branches open in Africa, Australia, Dubai and Israel, each restaurant is designed with its own individual look and feel, though all possess the signature towering staircase or wall of wine and lavish decor with rich textures and colours.

Specialising in prime cuts of superior quality beef, aged and then cooked to perfection, the menu also offers seafood options, chicken and premium Australian game. Start with an entree of boerewors (a traditional African dish of grilled beef sausages served on polenta and topped with chakalaka sauce), or succulent shelled prawns pan-fried in a creamy garlic and white wine sauce, served with steamed rice. Follow with a prime fillet of certified Australian Angus beef grilled to order with a special in-house basting and served on a bed of wilted spinach with forestiere potatoes, Parisian carrots and shiraz jus, or marinated pieces of chicken, skewered, with lemon, red onions and capsicum, served with saffron rice and a creamy prego sauce. Finish with the warm dark chocolate fondante with a pistachio heart and vanilla ice-cream. An extensive and impressive range of wines is offered.

I have dined here quite a few times now, and the meals are fantastic. Fabulous range of steaks, and lamb cooked to perfection and the wine list is quite extensive. They also have great cocktails. On top of that the service is excellent, and comfortable and classy atmosphere too. Very popular, bookings essential. Very impressive dining experience. Definitely recommended.

Always like this place - although upstairs is a very different experience to down. They could make it more like a proper wine place (at least upstairs) by pouring wine by the glass at the table.
