PROFILE BY BEST RESTAURANTS
Gaijin is a stylish restaurant that offers something a little different to lovers of Japanese food. Chef Toar Christopher, who comes with experience from many Japanese restaurants in the United States, specialises in Japanese fusion, giving a contemporary edge to this traditional cuisine. The restaurant has a similarly modern ambience, with flowing curtains dividing the small dining area of bright yellow furnishings and simple decor. Starters include the likes of "Gaijin Special Salmon Salad", "Big Bang" and "Dynamite" – baked chopped scallop with egg, masago and Christopher's signature special sauce – but it is the unique sushi rolls that are the main attraction here.
Sharing is the best way to enjoy the varied flavours of the sushi menu, including the "Spider vs Dragon Roll", "Baked Dynamite Roll" (California roll, topped with baked chopped scallop, crabstick with spicy mayonnaise served with terriyaki sauce and green onion) and the "Crunchy Spicy Salmon Special" that is raw spicy salmon and tempura crunch, topped with salmon slices, served with Gaijin special sauce. There are also several don, tempura and udon dishes available such as "Chicken Katsu Don", "Spicy Pork Belly Don" and "Beef Udon" to name a few. The food is original and innovative with fresh, interesting flavours and all dishes are reasonably priced, well-sized and beautifully presented. The relaxed surrounds and friendly, helpful staff also help to make dining here a pleasurable experience.
