KENZAN JAPANESE RESTAURANT
Melbourne, Victoria

Top10 Image
Awarded One Chef Hat - The Age Good Food Guide 2007-2014. Few restaurants can boast that they've been at the top of their game for 20-odd years, but such is the case with Melbourne's Kenzan. The restaurant's 1980s fit-out now has a kind of retro charm and includes a sushi bar and tatami room. Whether it's traditional Japanese fare or sushi that's made with the kind of respect you were told to give to your elders, Kenzan delivers time and time again.

PROFILE BY BEST RESTAURANTS

At lunch time choose the bento box, a special lunch box which includes sashimi, prawn dumplings, small appetizers and rice, presented in a traditional Japanese box and served with miso soup. Sushi and sashimi are very popular here with the presentation truly captivating and a variety of different options available. From the a la carte menu choose an entree of horenso gomaae (lightly cooked spinach in sesame seeds) or the sugaki (fresh oysters with citrus flavoured ponzu vinegar). Follow with a main of sake teriyaki (grilled salmon in teriyaki sauce or lightly salted then grilled, served with miso soup and rice) or the chawan mushi (steamed egg custard with chicken, shrimp and vegetables). Finish with the green tea creme brulee. The wine list comprises many local varieties including a good sake selection.
