MATTEO'S
Melbourne, Victoria

2016 The Age Good Food Guide Awards - Two Chef Hats
Housed in an elegant Victorian terrace, past the bohemian enclave of Melbourne's famous Brunswick Street, Matteo's offers seasonal contemporary Australian cuisine with Japanese overtones and an extensive wine list featuring rare ‘cult' Victorian wines. Chef Brendan McQueen's dishes are polished and assured and with a dash of Italian hospitality from the ever-present owner Matteo Pignatelli, this smart restaurant is the full package.

DETAILS

Matteo's encompasses a chic European dining room with salon-style decor from velvet drapes to lush wallpapers. Opulently decorated, the rich colours, heavy damask linen-set tables and ambient light fittings, create a luxurious feel and add a sense of occasion to the dining experience. There is also a chic bar area for a casual meal and glass of wine. The open area exudes style and sophistication with comfortable banquette seating and the ambiance or original antique French bar fittings.

What works so seamlessly is the combination of the formal and the cool. Owner Matteo Pignatelli, continues to re-invent the restaurant, which has been showered with coveted Chef Hats since 1996.

FOOD & BEVERAGE
Matteo's menu is contemporary and assured with Japanese influences woven into all of Chef Brendan McQueen's food. His innovative menu treads flawlessly between differing culinary influences, and he is committed to mastering his craft his own way. For the best experience, choose the seasonal tasting menu – a set menu of small tastes served over four courses, allowing you to experience a selection of McQueen's dishes. You can also opt to have each course matched with wine. The cellar is extensive featuring quality drops hailing mostly from Victoria and South Australia with a handful of European stalwarts to round off the list. Matteo's is a fully licensed restaurant, BYO bottled wine is available at a corkage charge of $20 per bottle.

CHEF RECOMMENDATIONS

Apart from the obvious Matteo's, I enjoy the clever cooking of Hare and Grace. Its set under the Rialto Tower in a pub/Tavern setting. The genius that is Raymond Capaldi never ceases to amaze me.
