Kahaani means 'story' in Hindi, and this Carlton restaurant has a good one. Founded by two friends with roots in India and dreams in Melbourne, Kahaani on Lygon Street is an ode to the home cooks, bustling bazaars, and regional traditions that shaped them. The menu is deliberately small and precise, drawing from select regions across India rather than trying to cover everything at once. Moody subdued lighting, suede walls adorned with pottery plates and exposed brick set a romantic, intimate scene. The private Cabinet Room is available for special occasions, and the banquet option is a brilliant way to journey through the menu without overthinking it.
