PROFILE BY BEST RESTAURANTS
The Oxford no longer has its posh dining room but it still sports its Burger and Becks deal. No ladies, this does not mean your Ox burger comes with a handsome English footballer, but a bottle of icy Becks beer – the perfect low maintenance partner. It is still the most requested dish on a menu with several other temptations: a beef pattie or chicken breast fillet in a warm roll filled with bacon, egg, tasty cheese, salad, onion jam and pepper relish, plus Ox fries – phew! It's not hard to see why diners stick to tradition here.
Should you stray from the tried and tested, the tapas plate oozes with a sexy, spicy mix of chorizo sausage, roasted capsicum, olives, arancini, marinated squid, fetta, dips and pita bread. Kangaroo jumps out as a special with its char-grilled smokiness, spiced lentils and coriander yoghurt; and large ravioli pillows are plumply stuffed with pumpkin, pine nut and ricotta in a bed of vine-ripened tomato sauce. The dessert menu is short but oh so sweet. Blueberry parfait with luscious honeyed walnuts and sable biscuits should not be passed over. Sadly, the Oxford's fine dining room has been passed over for a gaming room, but the bistro is still going as strong as an Ox Burger.
