PROFILE BY BEST RESTAURANTS

When a restaurant clocks up awards every year since opening, you feel compelled to see what all the fuss is about. In a city busy with Thai cuisine, this one must be doing something continually right. Nu Thai does not present pretentiously, but rather simply and tastefully with minimal Asian decor. Polished floorboards and wooden café chairs declare it welcoming and casual. A sizeable specials board provides tasty rivalry to the regular menu. Snaffle a window seat to watch Chinatowners hustle by, or catch their reflection in glass-framed awards along a wall. Ask chef Thomas Ng why his restaurant is such a winner, and he humbly attributes it to personable, professional staff, several of whom are long-time friends.
It is safe to assume though that much of what people love about Nu Thai, is Ng's food. This resonates in a plate of prawn mien cum. Its four glistening prawns, pretty as a picture set on individual betel leaves. It is a shame to eat them until your mouth is filled with their soft sweetness, and that of a thick coconut sauce. All is contrasted with the zing of chilli, lime and ginger, textural crunch of peanuts, and those papery leaves. Seafood dishes may also bring barramundi with Thai water spinach, Japanese scallops with asparagus, soft shell crab with salt and pepper. Ng's presentation of pad Thai is what you will see in Asia's eateries. Tamarind-tinged noodles come in a bulging omelette cacoon, ripe to be fork-torn apart, ribboning the egg throughout. Cracker stuff.
