Lucia's is an original. One of the few remaining places where the fundamentals haven't changed since the fifties, here you'll still find good old-fashioned hospitality and home-style food served in old-school surroundings. The decor is fabulous, a little pocket of well-preserved history tucked away in Adelaide's Central Market, with its chequered floor, bright orange tables and lolly jars lining the counter. Established by Lucia and Pasquale Rosella in 1957, Lucia's has been a well-known meeting spot for market-goers since it opened.
The food at Lucia's comes with an entire philosophy to back it up and the main ingredient is tradition. The dishes you will find served in Lucia's today hark back to Lucia's own mother and grandmother's recipes learned long ago in Naples and the hearty wholesomeness is present in every mouthful. Start the day with a full breakfast of bacon, eggs, tomato and delicious mushrooms on toast or perhaps one of the coffees for which Lucia's is famous. For lunch try the conchiglioni (large shell pasta) stuffed with ricotta and spinach topped with napoletana sauce and grated cheese or the osso bucco pizzaoila served with rice and roasted pumpkin. Not one to baulk at sharing her recipes, Lucia's delicious pastas and sauces are available to take home from Lucia's Fine Foods next door.
