PROFILE BY BEST RESTAURANTS

Stepping through the red door to the Himalayan Cafe is almost like walking through a portal to some well kept dining secret in the Himalayan foothills. The atmosphere at this restaurant is calming and the decor is traditional and comfortable. Diners are greeted by an adornment of Buddhist prayer flags and at the centre of the restaurant is a huge fireplace that spreads a pleasant warmth throughout the dining room. A statue of Tara, who represents compassion and peace, overlooks diners from the fireplace.

Established in New Farm for over a decade, Himalayan Cafe is much loved among locals and regular diners alike. The cuisine bursts with flavour and is a must for anyone who appreciates the style of food which the Nepalese are renowned for. Treat yourself to a traditional Himalayan bread with a yoghurt and mint dipping sauce. Many declare it to be most delicious starter bread ever eaten. A favourite dish among patrons also is the bakhara with tender cubes of goat lightly marinated with ginger, garlic paste and Himalayan spices cooked with potato and pumpkin and served with jasmine rice. The menu is extensive and it also amply caters for vegetarian tastes. Head chef, Purna, has been cooking for 25 years and he is dedicated to using the freshest of daily vegetables and spices. It is essential to book ahead as the restaurant fills up regularly. An added bonus is that Himalayan Cafe is BYO.

Unique quirky decor you really do feel like you're in another world. This is good for groups or a nice romantic dinner. The restaurant is always packed with people so it is quite noisy however it certainly doesn't ruin the evening but creates a vibrant atmosphere. Very friendly service and the food is always a guaranteed flavour sensation and you're never waiting long. The Himalayan Bread is a 'must try'!
