Perched behind the doors of a whimsical old shop on Milton Road, Auchenflower’s secret weapon is awaiting your taste sensations. Deer Duck Bistro is more than just great food – it’s a visual, sound and taste renaissance experience.

I am yet to stumble upon a destination quite like it. With an eccentric vibe more in tune to the likes of another time, this fine-dining destination breathes comfort, donning an array of the exotic and peculiar. Large plush armchairs rest against a mural of antiquity and contemporary art, all of which is the visionary excellence of owner Nicholas Cooper.

Boasting 25 years working as a chef in Melbourne and Brisbane, his eye for an authentic dining experience can be put down to his immaculate attention to detail. Oh, and of course, his ability to strip a mature woman of her dignity as she attempts to clean up the remnants of each morsel with her tongue.

Their degustation menu draws out hours of complete and utter pleasure. With each course came a new journey, and not one moment of it trickled any form of disappointment. From the first bite of Amuse Bouche, to the decadent Chocolate Forest with Seven Textures of Chocolate and Orange Marshmallow, each and every moment was a visual and flavoursome experience of head chef Mihn Le’s whimsical imagination.

Whether it was a mini ocean oasis on our plate in the case of the Yellowfin Tuna with Thai Pesto, White Fungus, Edible Sand and Sea Shells, or the to-die-for coconut broth drizzled atop the Balinese Duck Breast with Beans, Shoots and Tofu.

But I think it was the pure sense of relaxation coupled with professional, friendly customer service that framed our entire evening, just like the beautiful ornate gold frames adorning the candle lit walls.

I’m already searching for my next Deer Duck Bistro experience, which might be utilising the snug little function space upstairs, equipped with its own bar, bathroom, and intimate dining fit out.

Amazing experience, felt like I had escaped for a moment to an ethereal world of fantasy a mere stones throw away from my corporate shoebox in the city. The staff will captivate you, the plates will have you scratching for your Iphones to take snaps of meals such as the venison and kingfish, of which we were guided to indulge based on our wine selections from the Chalk & Cheese Bottle O down the street. Corkage was reasonable too at $10 a bottle. The office has been awoken, I brought my partner on recommendation from a colleague, word's getting out guys.
