Darwin and the North, Northern Territory

Top10 Image
Catch a sailor's yarn and a seaside sunset at the Darwin Sailing Club's sociable bar and eatery. This spacious bistro is a great spot for a casual meal serving a crowd-pleasing menu of tapas, pastas and pizzas as the sun sets over the beach. If you arrive during the day you won't be disappointed - try the beer-battered NT barramundi burger for a local take on an old favourite.

More info

With its spiffing location at the Darwin Sailing Club, Waterfront Bistro is the place to take in those famed Fannie Bay sunsets, or snap some of those elusive lightning storm photos while you snap up the kitchen's hearty Top End-style meals. On fine days, yachties gather near the shore for beer and boat-talk, while families enjoy sea breeze and seafood at the alfresco tables, surrounded by palms and poinsettias. When it's not exactly perfect sailing weather, diners can retreat inside and eat among the Club's collection of maritime memorabilia.

As you'd expect, it's no-nonsense, seafood-laden fare that rules in this corner of the Bay. Portions are sailor-sized (there are "mini-meals" for the littlies); picture a fisherman's basket heaving with chips, whiting, prawns and calamari or a prime hunk of reef-and-beef. The grilled barra is always a sure-bet, and the chilli prawns are creamy and moreish. Flavours from across the Indian Ocean include tangy Thai-style oysters, stir-fried ginger crocodile, and bug tails with garlic and basil. Check the dessert board for the luscious warm mud cake with fruit and ice-cream, or tiramisu with berry compote. A laid-back, unpretentious spot to enjoy a slice of Darwin's sailing and seafood culture.
