PROFILE BY BEST RESTAURANTS
What Room 10 lacks in size, it makes up for in service, quality coffee and hearty food. This hole-in-the-wall café, tucked away in a Potts Point laneway, is one of Sydney's best kept secrets. A handful of stools and wooden tables tumble out into the otherwise-empty laneway while an efficient team of waiters scoot through the tight set up.
Room 10's passionate baristas deliver consistently smooth coffee using Mecca beans. Working like a well-oiled machine, the Lilliputian kitchen churns out plates of toasted sourdough, topped with poached eggs, a mix of mashed avo, fetta and mint, or perhaps some lashings of prosciutto. Bowls of brown rice porridge, served warm in winter, cold in summer, keep the health-conscious cookies happy while a range of sambos and salads keep smiles on everyone's face come midday. Not everything can be made in their five foot square kitchen, so sweet treats are delivered daily from the king of the pastry world – Black Star in Newtown. The face and owner of the cafe, Dan Blackman, is the driving force behind this crowd-pleasing venture and I guess if it's good enough for celebrity chef (and a Room 10 regular), Neil Perry, then it's good enough for me.
