PROFILE BY BEST RESTAURANTS
Sprawling across the main drag of Newtown, Thai Pothong takes its name from the Po tree, under which Buddha reached enlightenment. You'll see him assuming various poses throughout the dining room, casting a watchful eye over the restaurant's proceedings. Studded with intricate artworks and grand light fixtures, the capacious restaurant is one of Newtown's most popular Thai eateries – a notable feat considering the abundance of such restaurants in the area. 1996 saw a change of management and expansion into the space next door, resulting in a 300-seat restaurant and adjoining gift shop.
Thai Pothong's extensive menu encourages the sharing of meals, so grab some friends and order a feast. Start with a spicy som tum papaya salad with prawns, lemon and peanuts, or deep-fried calamari with a sweet and sour plum sauce. Move on to a divine banana blossom salad dotted with prawns and barbecue chicken breast, and served with coconut milk, chilli jam and lime juice, or slice into steamed whole snapper with lemongrass, galangal and kaffir lime leaves. The menu covers all the required realms, from banquets to vegan and gluten-free dishes, so tickle the tastebuds with a variety of delicious options. Steamed black sticky rice with fresh mango and a drizzle of coconut milk is a delightful way to end the meal, or choose from the cheeky cocktails on offer. Thai Pothong is open for dine-in or takeaway lunch from Tuesday to Sunday, and dinner every night, and is an ideal spot for your next function – be it an intimate birthday dinner or a celebration for hundreds.
