BAMIYAN RESTAURANT
Sydney, New South Wales

Top10 Image
Bamiyan is an unexpected Afghan treat in the inner-west suburb of Five Dock, an area best known for its Italian fare. Its expansive menu includes more than 50 dishes based around chicken, lamb, beef or vegetables and incorporating flavours of the Middle East and India. The dining room gives guests a peek into Afghanistan beyond the images we see on the news; walls are painted in ochre colours and decorated with rugs and photos of the country.

Excellent, friendly service. As a first time patron was shocked to observe 'chef' or maybe 'owner' standing at bar happily picking his teeth with his fingers then with toothpick; put me off my food for a good hour. Meat dish was very tender but swam in a pool of oil. Side pickled vegetable dish was drowned in vinegar so inedible. Bread was 'heavenly'. Wine glass was stained in lipstick marks which I proceeded to remove with tissue. The waitress witnessed this but did not bother to replace glass with a fresh clean glass. Loved the atmosphere, the fireplace. I was somewhat disappointed but will go back to sample other dishes.
