Australia’s Dining Trends and Opportunities Amid Cost-of-Living Crisis

At Best Restaurants, our insights reveal that even amid financial pressures, Australians remain committed to dining out as a meaningful way to connect, celebrate, and reward.

Despite financial pressures, spending on restaurant experiences remains strong across the country, with Sydney and Melbourne leading the way.

Dining Trends and City Insights: Who’s Spending and Why

The findings uncover who’s splurging, who’s dining out most, and which city can truly claim the title of Australia’s foodie capital — proving that while prices rise, connection still matters more than cost.

“Even in a cost-of-living crisis, Australians are still finding room for connection,” said Rajneen Arora, CEO of Best Restaurants. “People might cut back on things, but they’re not cutting back on each other. Dining out has become one of the few luxuries that still feels worth it.”

When it comes to dining generosity, Sydney takes the crown. The city’s diners boast an average order value of $297, compared with $245 in Melbourne — showing Sydneysiders’ taste for premium dining and elevated experiences.

But Melbourne wins the consistency contest, boasting higher repeat dining and redemption rates. While Sydney splurges, Melbourne savours — proving that for Victorians, dining out isn’t a treat, it’s a way of life.

Across both cities, the gender divide is clear:

  • Men spend more, women buy more often

  • In Melbourne, women purchase 1.4 times more frequently than men

  • In Sydney, women purchase 1.3 times more frequently

  • Sydney men spend $311 per gift, compared with $305 for women

  • Melbourne men spend $264, while women spend $240

Nationally, men average $271 per gift, while women average $255. The verdict? Men make fewer but splashier gestures, while women drive Australia’s dining economy — turning “just because” into the new special occasion.

“What we’re seeing is a shift, not a slowdown,” Arora added. “Australians are spending smarter. Instead of buying more, they’re buying meaning — one premium dining experience that creates a memory rather than a moment of retail regret.”

Australia’s Favourite Cuisines

Australians are also spending beyond their voucher value when redeeming, proving dining is about connection, not cost.

Nationally, the most-redeemed cuisines are:

  1. Modern Australian
  2. Italian
  3. Japanese
  4. Steakhouse
  5. Seafood

Modern Australian remains the undisputed favourite, while Japanese cuisine is the breakout trend of the year — reflecting a national shift toward lighter, experience-driven dining.

“Food is Australia’s love language,” said Arora.

“Our data shows that generosity, connection, and celebration all come together around the table. Sydney may spend more, but Melbourne lives and breathes dining culture — it’s part of who they are. Whether it’s a last-minute gift, a corporate thank-you, or a date night to remember, dining remains the country’s favourite way to say ‘you’re worth it.’”
