Jackie McMillan's Recommendations

Best cafe at Devon Cafe
During the week, my favourite cafe is Devon on Devonshire Street. Pretty much everything that comes out of their kitchen is amazing, from exotic restaurant-level breakfasts featuring lesser used proteins like morcilla or oxtail, all the way down to their sweet muffins. On the weekend you're most likely to find me at Camperdown's Runcible Spoon scoffing Thai-style eggs with nam jim, mostly because I adoring their well-made Golden Cobra coffee.
Special occasion at The Bridge Room
If I get a night off, and I want to splurge, you'll find me slipping into Ross Lusted's restaurant, The Bridge Room, in the CBD. From the moment you slide into a stylish but comfortable Autoban chair in this relaxed-looking dining room, it's evident you're in for a seamless experience, and without the stuffy white tablecloths you find at other fine diners. My go-to dish is his Moreton Bay bugs with sweet grilled endive, tamarind and roasted chilli paste.
Best kept secret at The Owl House
The Owl House in Darlinghurst is one of those bars I'd rather keep to myself. Chef Roy Ner's cooking is magical (and so far beyond what you expect at a small bar) and New Yorker Amir Halpert is the consummate host. He even made me love the Cosmopolitan - by making it gently pink with his own house-made cranberry syrup. That said, my favourite post-work tipple is a Corpse Reviver for the way it washes the taste of a hard work day away.
Late night dining at Golden Century Seafood Restaurant
The years haven't dampened my love for Golden Century. Where else at 2am in Sydney can you find a crowded restaurant that includes a drunken stand-up comic, loudly picking on tables of equally drunk partygoers? Thankfully he's clever enough to avoid the pair of jittering ice dealers, busy stocking up on two-courses of Peking duck. This is late night Sydney in all her shame and glory, being looked after by silver service waiters who don't even raise an eyebrow as they trot out your pipis in XO sauce.
