Best kept secret at Happy Hours Tea Bar
Happy Hours Tea Bar, Sunnybank. We have nicknamed this place the ‘Bain-Marie of Death' but don't let that put you off.... Haha. Sorry, probably a bit late for that, huh. Situated in a car park and adjoining an Asian Grocer and Chinese Doctor, this is definitely Brisbane's best kept cheap eat secret. And I mean cheap. Usually I can share a $9.95 plate and be full! Now it's not the sexiest bain-marie but boy is it tasty. And you know it's good when you are the only non-Asian in there. Every. Single. Time. Eat EVERYTHING! In particular the fish, pork belly and eggplant dishes.
Best cafe at Sourced Grocer
Sourced Grocer, Teneriffe. Not an egg in sight on this breakfast menu and I love that! Also very clever cooking, there is no actual kitchen but just a bench with a couple of appliances and what they came up with is genius. Plus after feeling all inspired by a yummy breakfast, you can shop the produce and take something home to whip up yourself a little later. I love the Sardines with Fennel Jam and Confit Garlic or the Ham and Gruyere Toastie with Posh Pickles.
Yering Station, Yarra Valley. A beautiful property with my favourite Cellar Door in the region. The winery building, circa 1859 is rustic, relaxed and modest. With a great wine, a produce store, luxury accommodation and a fine dining restaurant, Yering Station is a must visit if you are in the Yarra Valley.
Special occasion at Chiswick Woollahra
Chiswick, Woollahra. I am literally in the Hamptons! Matt Moran is brilliant and Chiswick is his best yet. Relaxed and casual this would be my pick for a girls lunch or family dinner. The food is perfection but not too pretentious, not so much tweezer action going on on this menu. Just great food, at a great price, in the most beautiful setting. I love to share all the nibbles and small plates, that is just how I like to eat, less plate envy that way and you get to try everything. I particularly like, Prawn Popcorn, Chargrilled Cuttlefish and Smoked Eggplant and the Chiswick Steak Tartare.
Favourite international restaurant at Nobu at Crown Melbourne
Nobu, Melbourne. Well I probably don't even need to say anything about Nobu. A Japanese food master famous all around the world, Nobu would be the place I choose to have my last meal. I love raw, fresh, light and tasty food and you can't beat Nobu for the freshest of sashimi and the most perfectly balanced flavours. Menu picks are just about everything, but if you don't want to send yourself too broke, then I recommend Yellowtail Kingfish with Jalapeno, Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna, Beef Tataki with Ponzu and Garlic Chips and you would have to get the Signature Nobu Miso Cod.
Late night dining at Kwan Brothers
Kwan Brothers, Fortitude Valley. Great for a late night cocktail and a bit of a top up as the dinner starts to settle. Great late night party atmosphere and good Asian style street food. Menu picks, Sandcrab Corn Chip, Pork Bao Bao and the Vietnamese Salmon Tartare.
