Best kept secret at Merrijig Kitchen
After a 4 hours drive along Great Ocean Road, west of Melbourne, there is a little town called Port Fairy. Apart from it next to the sea, there is a place called Merrijig Inn. Inside this 170 years old building, Chef Tanya Connellan presenting magic from local produces. She learnt her magic from Stephanie Alexander back in the 90s. Selected Bio Dynamic focus wine list does wine my heart. I will leave the rest for you to explore, because it is a hidden treasure "Best Kept Secret".
Best Winery is a bit different than best wine. Because some of the best wine that I have experienced, may not have a reception or a wine tasting structure as such. I guess because wine makers are too busy making wine and lack of business minded business partner! So Best Winery, I would say Port Phillip Estate (Mornington Pennisula, Victoria). Great balance of quality wine with quality architecture. Lunch with a view! Must try their delicious Kooyong Pinot Noir...
Best cafe at Dukes Coffee Roasters
Dukes offers one of the best coffee bean sourced around the world, and roast it inside Dukes's HQ. Baristas are always fun to talk with, especially with their (his/her) charming smile and fruitful knowledge about coffee / culture and everything in between. I always leave this cosy coffee bar with a smile and of course a few does of coffee aroma!
Special occasion at Flower Drum
Since I am in the industry, this is definitely a torture to answer. There are just too many venue that the dishes are well executed with top services. My top list are Jason Lui's Flower Drum Cantonese Restaurant, Teage Ezard's ezard, Chef Nic Poelaert's Brooks Restaurant. Wait... there is more! I do travel frequently around Victoria Australia, and there are places that worth a drive for this "Special Occasion". The Provenance (Beechworth), Lake House (Daylesford), Royal Mail Hotel (Dunkeld).... Okay, I need to stop dreaming about my "Special Occasion" now.
Late night dining at Ling Nam
No matter is 1pm in the afternoon or 1am in the morning, this place always serving me authentic Cantonese dishes and street style hospitality. When ordering their signature dish "Pipi with XO sauces", make sure you also ask for the Chinese Donut to soak up the sauces! Deep Fried Pork Intestine is far more delicious than you would have imagine. Remember to head to this place if you already have a few drinks, because this is much more satisfying than a Souvlaki ! (Oh.. I am so bias...when I am tipsy ^_^ )
