Late night dining at Ying Chow
Ying Chow, Gouger Street, Adelaide. If you want to eat at 11pm at night this is where you go for great food and comically indifferent service. Their spicy BBC (Broad beans, Bean curd and preserved Cabbage) is an Adelaide institution and their Vinegar Ribs are lip-smackingly good.
Favourite international restaurant at The Bund in Shanghai
Mon the Bund, The Bund, Shanghai, where I lived for three years. Very much an old, establishment restaurant now it was the first fine dining restaurant to open on The Bund back in the day. Dining on roast lamb and pavlova there was always such a wonderful experience.
Best cafe at Street-ADL
Street Adelaide, Rundle Street, Adelaide. I love their small but quality street food and snacks menu and their understated yet chic fit-out. Any restaurant that has pork crackling and pippies (Goolwa cockles, for locals) on the permanent menu wins my respect and my heart.
Special occasion at Bistro Dom
I'm a big fan of Bistro Dom, Waymouth Street, Adelaide. The executive chef, Duncan Welgemoed, has been responsible for so many great culinary things in Adelaide in recent years, not least of which have been his pop-up dining experiences with The Happy Motel. Duncan's food is sensational, the staff are friendly rather than stiff and the tables are perfect for cosy chats.
