In Victoria, we are fortunate to be blessed with some amazing wine regions within a few hours drive. My consistent favourite for its expansive and impressive grounds along with a long wine lunch is Montalto in Red Hill South. Start off the day with a wine tasting at their cellar door and follow with a decadent three course meal with matched wines.
Late night dining at Nieuw Amsterdam
Nieuw Amsterdam is a sleek underground New York-esque eatery and bar which is open late to attend to those in need of an exceptional late night feed and tipple. With a well-executed menu and an extensive beer and cocktail list - you won't need to resort to that dubious-looking kebab when there's Nieuw Amsterdam.
Best kept secret at Beatrix
It's hard to keep a secret in Melbourne these days but Beatrix in North Melbourne is so special and, in my opinion, underrated so I'll classify it as a (not so well-kept) secret. They keep their menu concise with a variety of interchanging ciabattas, but their cakes! The delectable and delicious spread of cakes and slices will give you a panic attack because you will want one of everything before the person behind you steals the last piece (yes, speaking from personal experience).
Special occasion at Saint Crispin
For those special occasions, I would opt for the chef's tasting menu at Saint Crispin for their amazing and innovative dishes. Although all our dishes were exceptional, a couple of favourites were the tender king salmon with shaved calamari, oyster, squid ink and saffron and a refreshing blood orange parfait dessert with a lovely balance of tart and sweet.
