PROFILE BY BEST RESTAURANTS
The English translation of this Italian eatery is "the first place", perhaps a suggestion that this should be the first place you try in Southbank for delicious Italian fare. It's not a bad suggestion either with its reputation well deserved, for Il Primo Posto is a firm favourite on this Southbank strip, offering modern Italian and Mediterranean fare. Choose to sit indoors with bright decor and intriguing artworks, or outdoors near the river's edge under large garden umbrellas and low hanging leaves. The ambience is as bright as the paintwork and if you squint you might just trick yourself into believing you're dining somewhere in Europe.
Nibble on warm Turkish flat bread with garlic oil while you peruse the menu. Start with crispy calamari strips tossed in chilli, lemon and sea salt with tomato salsa and rocket, or garlic prawns with rice pilaf. From the pasta and risotto menu sample the spinach and ricotta tortellini with roast pumpkin, fresh thyme and creme fraiche, or the seafood risotto with prawns, scallops, mussels and calamari in a chilli garlic tomato sauce. For a main, try the veal medallions cooked with mushrooms in a brandy cream jus and served with mustard crumbs and fried gnocchi. Be sure to leave room for the homemade desserts. An extensive wine list is offered.
