PROFILE BY BEST RESTAURANTS
In the heart of Melbourne's former meat market sits the Hotel Metropolitan, a heritage listed building that recently underwent some serious renovations resulting in a warm and friendly front bar and an elegant yet relaxed dining room.
Owner-restaurateur Craig McVean utilises his prime location well, frequenting the local markets for the top produce that can be found on his bar and dining room menus. While in the bar, choose to nibble on a salt and pepper tasting plate consisting of calamari and quail or choose a heartier option like the meat market steak on mash with sauteed spinach and red wine jus. Alternatively settle into the inviting dining room for three divine courses. Choose from the regularly changing specials board which boasts the market's top picks, whether they be squab or lobster, or peruse the a la carte menu. Start with a sharing plate of grilled saganaki cheese with sauteed spinach, smoked salmon, artichoke hearts, black olives and lemon. Follow with a main like the corned beef girello on Irish champ with greens and mustard sauce, or the snapper and truffle oil pie with mash and roasted tomato. Finish with the frozen Valrhona chocolate terrine with wild cherries or a selection of cheeses. The extensive wine list consists of predominantly Australian varieties with some French and German options.
