PROFILE BY BEST RESTAURANTS
Hairy Canary is truly Melbourne, a hidden treasure that's cool, fresh and a little bit funky. A large front window opens to reveal Little Collins Street below where you can sit at a small bar area sipping a cocktail off the hairy and sour selection such as the berretto: Absolut citron, amaretto and raspberries. A banquette runs the length of one wall flanked by round bistro style tables, with a well stocked bar opposite. Up two small stairs and you're in the dining area where tables are covered in linen and the lights are intimately low.
The menu is Spanish influenced, found even in the breakfast options such as the "eggs in purgatory" with spiced fetta crumble. Alternatively choose from the hairy tapas selection with lamb dolmades or chickpea battered prawns. If pizza's more your thing then try the harissa chicken with roasted red onion, labne and grape tomato, or perhaps a pasta of penne with speck, pine nuts, mascarpone and spinach. "Moor food" options include wood-roasted veal cutlets crumbed in monchego, lemon and parsley served with caponata and salsa verde. Finish with a sweet tapas plate to share or the churros with cinnamon and chocolate dipping sauce. If cocktails aren't your thing then enjoy a bottle or glass of wine from the concise selection.
