Big is beautiful at Plume, a large and usually crowded Doncaster restaurant where the seafood dishes are outstanding, and the choices of Cantonese cuisine nearly infinite. The kitchen's speciality is traditional slow-cooked soups and broths - the perfect entree on a cool night. Plume, which looks forbiddingly charcoal grey from the outside, actually has an interior that's spacious and rather modern.

More info

Plume is in a cluster of so-called family restaurants on Doncaster Road, and after the first visit, you'd think that for good food and a healthy approach to eating, everyone should be part of a Chinese family. Plume, which looks forbiddingly charcoal grey from the outside, is large, rather modern and cheerfully busy inside. Diners range from couples to multi-generational groups, and there are high chairs for babies.

There's a lot to be said for large Chinese restaurants, and the menu is the first good thing. This is an extensive list, with a huge choice that is supplemented by whiteboards listing the day's specials in English and Chinese, which might include venison and a special duck dish. All the familiar favourites are here: calamari with spicy salt, fish fillets in black bean sauce, crispy skin chicken, Szechuan beef, and so on. But here's a tip to make the most of your dining experience: it's worth being adventurous here. Try the seafood hot pot with abalone, prawns, scallops, mushroom and sea moss; or a soup or banquet. Book for weekend yum cha or there's a good chance you won't get a table, and make sure you go with a good appetite.

Spagman - 21/12/2015
Over priced with pretty poor service. The first entree came out 20 minutes ahead of the final one. All the mains came out together but that was ok until the waiter even announced the fact with a cheery "ok you have everything now" as if to say, "ok shut up eat and get out". The first waiter didn't take a drinks order from half our group and when we finally got their attention to complete the drinks order they took ages to bring them out. Once we finished our drinks they didn't even bother to ask if we wanted more. It's not just poor service that's $30-$40 extra on the bill they missed out on. Sub par experience at a very expensive restaurant that needs to rethink their level of service. There are places in the local area that are half the price with much better service.
