This unpretentious restaurant has been a local favourite for over two decades. It feels more like you're having a meal at your best friend’s place, except the food is slightly more upmarket – if only your best friend could cook this well. The tiny open kitchen, headed by Chef Sean Moran, churns out a handful of innovative Modern Australian dishes that change daily.
Overlooking the esplanade and iconic Bondi Beach, North Bondi Fish may well be this suburb’s finest restaurant. Nothing is more appropriate for this location than fish and chips but the kitchen offers more than your ordinary fried affair. Celebrity Chef Matt Moran delivers you a grown-up, stylish take on ocean food. The decor is 'beach house up the coast' with a cute nautical theme and a breezy feel, perfect for a Sunday lunch sipping rosé and people watching.
Sydney’s little slice of the Upper West Side, Lox Stock & Barrel is a New York-style deli that bakes its own bagels, rye and challah bread. The menu features classic Jewish dishes such as homemade brisket pastrami alongside Bondi-friendly options (think kale salads and sprouted quinoa toast).
Right on busy Bondi Road, former Embers Mezze Bar Chef Simon Zalloua runs the kitchen, delivering some of the best Middle Eastern fare in Sydney. The mezze style dishes come from Zalloua’s Lebanese upbringing, with added inspiration from Arabic and Moorish cooking traditions. The open, rustic space is sweetly furnished with wooden trimmings, hanging pot plants and colourful illustrations on the exposed brick walls.
Icebergs Dining Room and Bar possesses one of the most coveted locations in Sydney; its second story site hovering above the ocean pool, with a view out over south Bondi's crashing waves. Unsurprisingly, seafood is the star of the menu that showcases seasonal produce, cooked with a regional Italian bent. The teal and glass dining room offers cushions and hammocks that invite guests to relax and enjoy the uninterrupted views of the beach.
He’s chartered restaurants in Japan and the UK and finally, household name Bill Granger has opened in his own neighbourhood. Bill’s famous ricotta hotcakes and corn fritters will, of course, be on the menu, alongside other standout dishes such as chilled tea smoked trout and green tea noodles. Even with 100 seats, expect to wait for a table.
Sidling up beside A Tavola Bondi and China Diner in Hall Street's foodie complex, Da Orazio Pizza + Porchetta is from restaurateur Maurice Terzini. Heading up the kitchen is former Becasse head chef Monty Koludrovic, who delivers an Italian-inspired menu focussed on the pizza oven, and of course, spit-roasted Berkshire pork.
With a 1930s Shanghai-inspired interior, this restaurant fills the much-needed gap for quality Modern Asian food in Bondi. Much-loved by tourists and locals alike, the 220 seater’s menu takes cues from South East Asia and China with dishes such as masterstock pork belly and crispy skin drunken chicken. Start with a cocktail, order the banquet menu and see where the night takes you.
Just 10 minutes' walk from Bondi's famous surf and sand is Shuk, a corner cafe built on the tradition of the Israeli marketplace. Shuk lives up to the hustle and bustle of its namesake, with fresh local ingredients poured into a Mediterranean-inspired menu, plus there's pastries and breads that are baked on site every day. Grab a coffee and choose a treat from the artisan deli counter if you're on the run.
The view doesn’t get much better than this. Perched over Bondi Icebergs pool (just below Icebergs restaurant), enjoy a flat white and BLT while watching Sydney’s finest and fittest hit the surf, practise yoga or swim some laps. After you’ve bathed in the sunlight, go for a wander around the coastline to nearby Tamarama or Bronte.
