Hobart and Surrounds, Tasmania

Combining history with stunning water views, a talented chef and an interesting modern Australian menu, the Dunalley Waterfront Café makes for a pretty fantastic restaurant. Located within the Bream Creek Vineyard in Tasmanias South-East, this cosy cellar door is famed for its seasonal menu and gourmet pizzas, topped with fine regional produce.

The cafe occupies a fish processing and canning plant from early last century, some of the original equipment now being used to decorate a small art gallery at the entrance. Up a few steps is the cafe proper with stunning water views over fishing boats through to The Narrows. Combine this with chef Ben Bate's CV featuring stints with Marco Pierre White in London, Bilsons in Sydney and Adelaide's acclaimed Magill Estate and his partner, Stephanie Stinkens' long experience in international hospitality, including service aboard the QE2, and you have a winning trifecta.

And then there's the food. A beautifully composed salad of grilled peaches, breseola, rocket and mascarpone sings of summer while the truffled mushroom soup is creamy sophistication in a demi-tasse. Thai-accented calamari and simple beer-battered fish are as fresh as the location suggests they should be. There's a superb three-cheese tart, a tasting platter featuring excellent pate, duck rillettes and pickled octopus, local scallops in saffron cream, three modern-style pizzas and a mouth-watering dessert selection. Or you can just pop in for a coffee, an Anzac biscuit and those ozone-flavoured views.

I used to live in Tasmania and have dined at this restaurant on two occasions. They make the absolutely best Pumpkin soup that I have ever tasted anywhere, and their fish, chips and salad is to die for. How I hope and pray that this building and business has survived the dreadful fires of January 2013, so that I can return when next I visit Tasmania and enjoy the food, views and ambience of this marvelous restaurant.

Every time we have visitors to Tasmania this restaurant is on our 'must' list. And it is always complimented by our friends and family as a first class choice of restaurant and terric value for money. It has never failed to provide fantastic food and friendly service. Keep up the good work

Fantastic food and location - would give ANY restaurant in Hobart a run for its money. Congratulations on such an innovative and wonderful menu. Atmosphere is also wonderful.
