Sydney, New South Wales

Located on Surry Hills' most popular dining strip, the White Horse is now home to the French-inspired Le Bistro @ Cheval Blanc. Despite The White Horse's contemporary design, you won't find modern fusion dishes here – Le Bistro's menu is a tribute to provincial French classics such as duck confit and crème brulee. Start with a drink at the bar before enjoying a three-course classic French menu in the restaurant.

Le Bistro @ Cheval Blanc is a French-inspired eatery tucked inside Surry Hills stalwart The White Horse. Comfortable bench seats line one wall, and candle lit dark wooden tables and chairs dot the remaining space. A black and white wall with sketched-looking images of a white horse is the central feature, while exposed brick and a chalked blackboard menu add a touch of old-school charm to this casual locals den.

There is no more typically French name for a restaurant than ‘Le Bistro', and the menu here follows suit. An homage to provincial French classics, the al a carte options include snails baked in their shells with aniseed liquor and French garlic butter, a charcuterie platter to share, bouillabaisse, and the obligatory steak frites (using Grass Fed southern Highlands Rib Eye). For dessert, it's apple tartin or crème brulee – oldies, but goodies nonetheless. A neat selection of Australian wine suits the classic bistro style, but if you're after something a little fancier, head over to the cocktail bar.

First class bistro style French food and classic well executed dishes. Very pleasant attentive waiter. We went on a voucher but received none of the all too frequent second class treatment. We are going back again. Recommended.

I went to the Le Bistro @ Cheval Blanc ( The White Horse Hotel in Surry Hills) with a group of friends for dinner. I must say what a turn around! The new owners have definately put some thought into the menu, the wines and the staff! Well done! My table ordered an array of entrees including the scallops, the mussels, the escargots and the freshly shucked sydney rock oysters. All plates were licked clean! For the mains, the duck, Salmon Confit and the eye fillets were the pick! and yet agiain, not a scrap to spare! All of this amazing yummy food was washed down with quite a few bottles of red wine from the interesting wine list not to mention the piano turned wine rack that you can choose a bottle from as well. I definately recommend a visit to "Le Bistro @ Cheval Blanc"!

Great simple French food. Well priced, Loved the duck - an indicator of good French food. Must be $10 less a main than any other similar restaurant around... Try the French wine and mussels in cream sauce....
