BISHOP SESSA
Sydney, NSW

What's in a name? Erez Gordon, owner of Balmain's popular Bistro Bruno and now Bishop Sessa, can answer this – apparently quite a bit of money. Formerly called Crown Street Assembly, this Surry Hills restaurant has been forced to swiftly change name to Bishop Sessa. Unlike its name, the sustainable menu remains under the guidance of chef Paul Cooper.

It was a cold a overcoming the usual Surry Hills parking windy night - and after problems (use Coles - even if it closes at 10.30) 4 of us were seated in the quieter down stairs section - comfortable and cozy - warm and inviting. We all thought it best that we shared a few starters and the charcuterie platter was ideal - a sensational smooth pate de foie; a chunky but tasty duck rillettes, thick slices of corned wagyu, a country style terrine - garnished with the smallest cornichons and house made chutney and baskets of thin crisp toasts. The heirloom carrots were not as impressive but actually complimented the richness of the charcuterie. My gnocchi with goats curd, baby green peas and broccoli was sensational. Observing the duck breast - it looked beautifully cooked - compressed and I was told succulent and moist, The wine list is comprehensive with a good range of districts and prices. Service was excellent and attentive. They have done a great job at Bishop Sessa - long may it continue. A winning move midst a jungle of other eating places - this is a real dining establishment.

What a surprise, the food here is absolutely amazing. My type of venue, the service and ambience is very professional and friendly but relaxed. No table cloths and although the food is fine dining quality and beautifully presented none of the micro herb / foam embellishments that are thankfully going out of fashion. All meat is organic / sustainable and butchered on site so good for the soul as well, it also allows them the keep cost down. Sensational value, a must try.
