Sydney, New South Wales

The newly renovated 3 Weeds Restaurant is now a more airy and bright casual dining space known as the Garden Room, boasting a new, elevated pub dining menu which is available throughout the entire venue. Floor to ceiling windows look out to the chef’s herb garden and botanicals strung from the ceiling bring the outside in. With its raw concrete flooring, exposed walls, fresh cream sails overhead, and warming festoon lighting there is a more contemporary feel. Long timber tables with bench seating are perfect for Darrell Felstead’s share-style dishes.

More info

Darrell returns to the 3 Weeds, 13 years after securing the venue its first One Hat in the 2004 Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide Awards. Be prepared to spend some time deciding which dish you’ll order off his new menu as although it’s not a long menu, it’s a good one with Darrell drawing on Australia’s cultural melting pot for inspiration.

Choose between comfort foods such as sticky teriyaki chicken wings, toasted rice, coriander ($12); potato and manchego croquettes with smoked chilli sauce ($12); roasted cauliflower, chimichurri, broccolini, pomegranate and puffed grain salad ($24); and spring lamb, porter & pea pie ($26), along with the punchy flavours of the Mexican chicken torta with slaw, chipotle, avocado, sour cream and chips ($19) and corn quesadilla with goats cheese, spinach, olive, avocado, coriander and spring onion salsa ($16). Many dishes are also designed to share including a whole lamb shoulder with tzatziki, hummus, mint and pea tendril salad ($60); and 600g Chateaubriand with beef fat potatoes, watercress and miso hollandaise ($75). Desserts are equally as persuasive with options such as banoffee pie ($14), bread and butter pudding with orange ice cream ($14) and chocolate tiramisu with ginger biscuit and coffee ($13).

Although we are not regular night owls, after we have been to a show and want something light to eat on the way home, we enjoy the excellent bar food and a drink at the 3 Weeds Hotel in Rozelle.
