PROFILE BY BEST RESTAURANTS

The little stairway that leads up to Bertani isn't a fitting introduction for the bright expanse upstairs. Sticking to decor traditionally associated with Italian restaurants, this vibrant Italian eatery proudly owns its red and white chequered tablecloths, wooden chairs, green booths, terracotta-tiled floors and yellow walls. Radiating a family friendly, homemade kind of appeal from bar to sunny terrace, Bertani unabashedly embraces the image it represents – this is where you come for Italian food.

However as traditional as the decor may appear, the menu is not limited to traditional fare; in fact sitting alongside standard Italian starters like garlic pizza bread are natural and kilpatrick oysters. Entrees invite the diner not only to try delicious antipasto (Sicilian olives, hot salami, semi-dried tomato, bread sticks and cheese), but also grilled halloumi with fresh herbs and lemon. For mains, as might be expected, the house speciality is pasta but there is also an extensive pizza selection with innovative choices like the fajita (Thai chicken breast with tomato and avocado) sitting alongside more traditional options. Bertani also offers interesting risotto, seafood, meat and poultry mains, including a delightful 1kg mussel pot (in a chilli tomato and fresh herbs or moules mariniere cream and white wine sauce) with chargrilled bread, and a crispy-skin pork belly with whiskey grapes and colcannon mash. The wine selection is once again a perfect (and surprising) match to the food – aside from a standard (though quite broad) range of local vino it also offers something of a rarity in Sydney – Lebanese wine. Imported from the Bekka Valley, a white and a red await to dazzle your tastebuds and once again prove that you should never judge a restaurant by its cover.
