DETAILS

The atmosphere is warm, inviting and familiar; the food is authentic, out of the ordinary and quite simply superb. This humble neighbourhood eatery specialises in Nonya cuisine, a cuisine built on the trade winds that pass through the Straight of Malacca from one Chinese port to another. Nonya was an honorific used to denote the local women who married the Chinese men, a union that culminated in dishes inspired by Chinese recipes and wok cooking, flavoured with the traditional spices and ingredients used by the local Malay community.

Chefs and brothers Alex and Allan Lee run the kitchen, while Alex's wife Claudia looks after their customers. The tom yum and laksas (prawn, chicken and seafood) are complex while remaining intricate and provide a wholesome dish for the lone diner. If you have come in a group then look towards the chef's specials – these guys really know how to cook, and it's here that they really stand apart. The squid kechap manis (deep-fried squid tossed in home-style sweet soy and chilli sauce with a hint of tamarind) sings sweetly to your tastebuds, while the beef rendang envelops you in its comfortable warmth, its gentle flavours and soft texture working perfectly alongside a serve of buttery roti prata.

Malaysian hawker food in Neutral Bay, Roti and Beef Rendang, and Hainanese chicken rice.
Justin North on 3/11/2014
Without doubt this has to be Ginger and Spice, specialising in Singaporean & Nonyan cuisine, authentic, amazing technique and flavours.
