China Beach is the vivacious little sister to Woolloomooloo celebrity China Doll. Flirtatious red accents are splashed across the brilliantly white interior – walls, furniture, gingham cushions and row upon row of ceiling-hung lanterns are all snow coloured. Intricate mosaic floor tiles reminiscent of porcelain art add further dimension, and give a sense of Oriental mystique. The menu at China Beach is inspired by many styles of Asian cuisine, modernizing dishes with traditional roots. Head Chef and Co-Owner Mai Busayarat, formerly of Jimmy Liks and China Doll, put's a contemporary spin on her family's curries and Southern Thai flavours. Each dish is unique, so sharing is encouraged in order to fully appreciate the cuisine. Lower your red chopsticks onto crispy soft shell crab and handmade wontons to start, and be sure to order the twice-cooked free range duck for main. Legs and breast of the rich meat are served in a sweet sauce of tamarind, ginger and crispy eschalot, embellished with red-skinned lychee's split open to reveal their delicate white flesh. Drinks-wise, the Ginger Cat cocktail of spiced rum, raw ginger, blood orange, aperol and ginger beer is made for beachside lazy afternoons, while the wine list is short but strong.
