Taking the celebrated food of its humble (but ever-bustling) Surry Hills establishment to a whole new dazzling level, Spice I Am – The Restaurant in Darlinghurst is where the renowned cuisine meets its match in decor. Raw, textured grey brick walls add an unprocessed touch, while glazed black brick columns frame floor-to-ceiling windows lending a sophisticated air. The surfaces are touched with strokes of light – a golden mural of weeping willow trees and birds at a centre bar and flickering tea light lanterns across the tables.
FOOD & BEVERAGE
The play on texture, depth and colour is not lost on the expansive big picture menu, where no item over $29.00. From entrees like the zesty roast duck salad (which comes with a chef's recommendation and all of the great Thai flavours – lemongrass, chilli, coriander), to mains like the spicy gaeng pla (a southern-style curry of New Zealand blue eye cod with Thai spices and torn betel leaf). The fiery qualities of this curry are perfectly paired with the tender white flesh of the cod. However, if you are not of the hot-inclined, there are also plenty of milder options like the pad kapow moo (a thinly-sliced pork loin fillet stir-fried with fresh garlic, chilli and holy basil). And, of course, there is dessert. The saa ku (a tapioca pearl pudding with coconut and palm sugar sauce) offers a wonderful balance of caramel-like sauce and creamy-yet-textured firmness of sago pudding. Alternatively you can cool your palate with one of the restaurant's signature cocktails or a glass (or bottle) of wine – there is a broad selection of each.
