PROFILE BY BEST RESTAURANTS

You don't know Phamish? All I can say is, you should. Wedged between restaurant heavyweights Christine Manfield's Universal and Lucio De Falco's Lucio's Pizzeria, Phamish is a Darlinghurst favourite.

Despite sitting next to two restaurants with illustrious reputations, Phamish is often the only restaurant in this tiny concrete alcove that is packed. Sure, they may provide plastic cups instead of wine glasses and guests may be forced to perch on uncomfortable plastic stools instead of chairs but there is a reason this place is so popular – and as you may have guessed, it has nothing to do with the décor.

I can still remember the first time I tried their duck pancakes. I devoured the dish as though it was my last meal on earth. Generous slices of Peking duck are wrapped together with fresh herbs in a transparent rice paper skin. Every time I return to Phamish, I try to convince myself to branch out from these pancakes– to try something different on the menu. But the scenario stays the same – the pancakes are ordered and greedily demolished as soon as they hit the table. Then there's the salt and pepper squid. You haven't tasted this popular/overdone dish until you've tried the Phamish version. Topped with lashings of chilli, shallots and coriander, this salt and pepper squid puts every other version to shame. Mains feature simple stir fries such as ocean trout, lemongrass chicken (also highly recommended) and a selection of salads and curry. There isn't one dish I wouldn't recommend.

With BYO, Phamish is one of the best value-for-money restaurants in the CBD.

Over priced, bottle of wine taken away before finished then kicked off the table. Too many better restaurants in Sydney to ever come back here.
