ALEGRIAS
Sydney, New South Wales

Located on Balmain’s vibrant Darling Street, Alegrias brings authentic Spanish tapas to Sydney shores. Chef Javier Sevilla has fashioned a menu of bold classics like gambas al ajillo, the famous king prawn dish sautéed in garlic and chilli infused olive oil and piquillo rellenos de brandada, spanish piquillo peppers stuffed with salt cured cod fish. It goes without saying that this kind of dining experience is best shared with family and friends. Add a big Spanish red to the mix, like an Arenegui Joven from Rioja and let the good times roll.

PROFILE BY BEST RESTAURANTS

Some people would say that authentic Spanish restaurants are a rarity in Sydney. Those individuals would be pleased to discover Alegrias, a hidden gem tucked away off Darling Street in Balmain.

Dining at Alegrias proves to be a delightful sensory experience, as soon as you walk through the doors, the diner is wooed by the high ceiling and elaborate decor. The restaurant is dimly lit, and the elegant dining tables with overhanging chandeliers create an intimate setting. A live guitarist plays lively Spanish music near our table, adding a festive vibe.

The interior is beautiful, but it is the food that impresses. We start with a selection of cured meats and tapas including a personal favourite - “patatas bravas” or potatoes served with spicy tomato sauce and aioli. There are other tapas classics too, succulent pieces of chorizo, fried calamari and homemade chicken pate served with bread.

But, the ultimate test of any Spanish restaurant is the quality of its paella. At Alegrias, the paellas are cooked from scratch with Spanish rice and saffron, which means quite the wait but it is worth it. I proudly declare that it is the best paella I have ever had.
