DETAILS

Podfood is set among the elegantly manicured gardens at the Pialligo Plant Farm, in that bizarre region of southern Canberra where the rural idyll of the bush meets the urban bustle of the city. It is this bustle that Podfood shelters patrons from, in its oasis of calm. The light and airy 1930s house has been completely refurbished, leaving only the stunning hardwood floors, and opens out onto an expansive outdoor dining area with a relaxing view. The original wooden floor contrasts with the modernist furniture; the final touches are amazing floral displays on each table, highlighting the bounty of the Pialligo Plant Farm.

Came across this restaurant whilst we were browsing amongst the nurseries in Pialligo. Bit hidden which seems a shame as the location and the food are truly excellent. How does Canberra do this, hidden gems where you least expect them? We were just expecting a simple lunch but got really amazing fine Aussie modern dining. And all in a back garden setting amongst the plants. Portions were on the smaller size but we didn't leave hungry. Best potato wedges ever! Sort of rough hewn and chunky but I'd go back just for those. The entrees and main were all great, because we were a large group we got to try each others' choices. All cooked to perfection and some really interesting combinations. But my favourite was definitely the deserts! Was thinking of going for a gelato but laziness took over and thought we'd see what they had to offer. Glad we did. Turned out their gelato, ice cream and sorbets are really novel. Really liked the malt ice cream and the parsley gelato. Definitely a boomerang. I'm back before the chef gets snatched up by a bigger restaurant that will charge full fare for food this good!
