ABELL'S KOPI TIAM
Canberra, Australian Capital Territory

Top10 Image
Meaning "coffee shop" in Malay, Abell's Kopi Tiam serves much more than just coffee in Canberra's trendiest suburb. Diners keep coming back for the fresh Malaysian dishes on offer in this friendly Manuka eatery. Malaysian-born chef Abell Ong settled into this bright and cheery restaurant back in 1998, offering modestly priced, authentic cuisine and he's stayed true to the formula that continues to prove itself over and over.

PROFILE BY BEST RESTAURANTS

The Straits of Malacca, from the northern reaches of Indonesia through to Singapore and Malaysia, comprise one of the great culinary destinations of the world. From fiery laksa to the ubiquitous satay and the elaborate cuisine of the Nonya (Chinese-Malay), this steamy Asian cooking pot has verve and spice that will tantalise the adventurous diner. Authentic cuisine from this region is a little thin on the ground in Canberra. Luckily, Malayisan-born chef Abell Ong has settled into this bright and cheery Manuka restaurant, offering modestly priced, authentic cuisine as one might find in a KL coffee shop.

Best Malaysian in Town - 20/09/2015
Had lunch and once again Abell's dishes are a class above the ordinary Malaysian you get elsewhere. They are crafted with a great deal of passion and with very high quality ingredients. His Hokkien noodles with Australian prawns is really outstanding. His small dish of mushrooms is world class. His other long standing dishes include Rendang and various curries - all the best outside Malaysia. Do not miss Abells for a meal if you get a chance, it will be an experience you will remember for a very long time
