Top10 Image
Oozing charm, individuality and a most enviable reputation, the Wig and Pen Brewery and Tavern in Civic boasts the best beer in town - and the news articles and accolades on the wall are testament to this. While many people get quite fanatical about their locals, this classic British-inspired pub is a cut above the rest, serving hand-pumped ale and classic pub fare from its quirky outpost near the centre of town.

Pubs often fall into two categories - those where people go to have their standard drink while watching the footy on the big screen, and those where people go to appreciate, dissect and discuss the craftsmanship that has gone into the boutique beverage they are enjoying. Even before you set foot in the Wig and Pen, there is no doubt about which type of venue this is. Inside, wood panels, a convivial red and green colour scheme, and a prestigious row of beer taps further confirms that the Wig and Pen takes their beer seriously. With one glance at the blackboard you will realise that it is no overstatement to say that the pub offers the best selection of local beer in Canberra and could rival some of Australia's best.

The sight of the walls is almost blinding thanks to the multitude of awards it has won for its brews over the years. The six regular beers served are Canberra institutions in themselves, and include numerous ales, stout and a beer that impresses me every time, the Amber Hefeweizen. This delicious beer of German heritage is unfortunately little known to Australian palates but offers delicious and complex flavours such as cloves and banana.

When it comes to the food available at Wig and Pen, the range effortlessly complements the beverages. Think hearty British pub food - maybe a Ploughman's Lunch to go with a Velvet Cream Stout.

Well worth inclusion on any Canberra to-do list, the Wig and Pen is a spirited and friendly place where you can enlighten your palate to one of the best selections of beer in the country.
