PROFILE BY BEST RESTAURANTS
Amalfi Pizzeria is a family institution. Over the last quarter of a century it has witnessed babies growing into adults, children becoming parents and parents becoming grandparents. Since 1981 this restaurant has served up family favourites that have kept people coming back. The simple room with its open kitchen, terrazzo floors, and intriguing sound cloud (designed to absorb the melee of noise created by the families beneath) form the backdrop to the simple southern Italian fare.
The menu focuses on traditional favourites, with many dishes remaining on the menu since the restaurant's inception. Pasta, pizza and veal dishes are featured predominantly with the quality of the ingredients the primary focus. Pasta dishes are all cooked to order. Try the amalfitana: linguini served with onion, dried tomato, eggplant, pine nuts, artichoke, spinach and oregano, a great example of the southern Italian style of cooking loaded with vegetables and flavour. Veal saltimbocca alla romana is one of their signature dishes: the veal topped with parma ham, pan fried with sage and served with a light glaze, greens and potato. The specials board rotates a list of favourites, combining seasonal produce with traditional recipes. The wine list is impressive, with 30 wines offered by the glass and many interesting Italian and Australian varietals.
