Crown Street, Surry Hills ten minutes south from the CBD, close to Cleveland Street end of Crown Street.

Push open the wooden double doors, inscribed with the words buvez (to drink) and mangez (to eat), and enter this haven of French culture. The decor will appeal to the Francophile within; mirrors are inscribed with the names of French cheeses, pictures of French wines and shopfronts adorn the walls, and the wooden furniture is reminiscent of bistros throughout France.

The menu is simple, mouth-watering and distinctly French. The terrine maison changes regularly and is always fantastic – perhaps duck, prune and Armagnac, served with frisee and spiced pear, or an ocean trout and scallop terrine with pickled courgette and sorrel. Mains feature a variety of meats; veal, fish, lamb and Boudin noir, all imparted with French flavours and executed with traditional cooking techniques. The steaks frites is fantastic, served with chips and salad and your choice of sauce – the moelle (bone marrow) is a stand out. The wine list is a further departure from the everyday – be transported to France sipping on one of the French varietals featured on the expansive wine list, many offered by the half bottle or glass. The selection is impressive and accommodates all tastes and budgets, with a list of reserve wines available for special occasions.

DETAILS
Authentic and atmospheric, Tabou restaurant is a must for all lovers of classic French food. The menu showcases traditional dishes such as twice baked gruyere and goat's cheese souffle or steak frites salade with bearnaise sauce. Of course the French take their wine seriously so as you would expect there is an extensive list of local and imported wines. Feel free to ask the helpful staff for any advice when choosing a wine to compliment your dishes.

The elegant function room upstairs seats 35 and is ideal for a corporae event or wine dinner.
