DETAILSLocated right on Phuket’s beautiful Kata Beach, guests of Mom Tri’s Boathouse are able to indulge in hands-on cooking classes without having to stray far from the relaxing Andaman Sea. These one and two-day courses are a favourite amongst visitors, held right at the hotel’s doorstep.
CLASSESMom Tri’s Boathouse has a reputation for serving delicious Thai fare at its two onsite restaurants, the Boathouse Wine & Grill and Mom Tri’s Oasis. These restaurants’ sous chef Rattana Pholthaisong transfers her intimate knowledge of local cuisine straight from the kitchen to food fanatic guests with comprehensive one- and two-day cooking courses.
Each class begins with a demonstration of the day’s menu items – on Saturdays these include tod man talay (deep-fried seafood patties), tom yam goong (spicy soup with prawns), gang kiew wan gai (sliced chicken in green curry), goong phad nam makham (sautéed prawns with tamarind sauce) and khao niew mamuang (sweet sticky rice with mango); on Sundays, it’s a starter of som tum (green papaya salad), followed by tom kha gai (herbed chicken soup in coconut milk), geng phed goong (prawns in red curry with vegetables), and pad thai talay (stir-fried Thai noodles with seafood) finished with sangkaya fugtong (pumpkin custard). Students are then encouraged to try to cook the dishes themselves, which are later tested together at a seated lunch.
Classes start at 10am and run until 1pm, when lunch with the group commences and are held twice a week. The one-day course costs approximately AU$65 per person, the two-day course about AU$100 per person. These prices include lunch and a complimentary copy of The Boathouse Thai Cookbook.
