As you approach Sala Rim Naam aboard one of the Mandarin Oriental’s enchanting ferry boats, the restaurant materialises like a poetic mirage of glittering colours and decoration. Once you arrive at your destination on the other side of the Chao Phraya River, the Mandarin Oriental’s painstaking attention to detail becomes palpable. Chandeliers lined with silk parasols hang gracefully from the ceiling as perfectly proportioned, delicately spiced dishes drift on and off the pristine tables. Traditional Thai dance performances add sparkle, drama and entertainment to an already picturesque venue. The restaurant’s re-opening in late 2007 has seen the addition of a stunning open air pavilion overlooking the river, and guests now have the option of sitting at ground level on cushioned benches, or at Western-style tables and chairs.

FOOD AND BEVERAGE
The lunch buffet or dinner set menu affords an opportunity to sample a range of Thai delicacies, or order a la carte on the Terrace if you want to choose your own exotic gourmet adventure. Diners can indulge in the vibrant flavours of a spiced green mango salad with crab meat or savour some deep fried honeyed chicken in Pandanus leaf. Sala Rim Naam has earned its long standing reputation as Bangkok’s finest Thai restaurant, always doing its utmost to create a magical and luxurious atmosphere while maintaining an unrivalled standard of cooking. Eating at Sala Rim Naam is both a cultural and a culinary experience, and the restaurant undertakes to intertwine these two elements into a traditional Thai treat that guests will always remember.

Visiting Sala Rim Naam is an altogether different dining experience. We were met in the hotel lobby (of the Mandarin Oriental) and were escorted to the back of the building, then put on a shuttle boat service that then carries you over the river to the restaurant. Being managed by one of the world’s most luxurious hotels, it’s no surprise the buffet was equally impressive – so extensive, and offering a huge range of various Asian dishes. Most of them were not what you would typically find in Sydney, which made it all the more exciting and authentic. There were even chefs on hand to talk you through each dish as you wandered along the service table. This restaurant is a great halfway point between Bangkok’s tasty but sometimes grungy street snacks and the city’s haute cuisine diners that tend to offer European cuisine rather than traditional, local fare. review 23/05/2011
