PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIALocated in a little street in Mosman Park, Tsunami has been in operation for almost a decade yet it remains quite a secret among those in the know. A uniquely decorated venue plays with a mix of traditional Japanese design and a modern twist of Western comforts. At Tsunami you’re not expected to remove your shoes nor are you expected to sit on the floor. Instead, you get to enjoy your food from the comfort of regular tables and chairs. There is, however, a great little Zen garden to admire between courses and some absolutely amazing photography on the walls by local photographer, Danny Khoo.
As for the food at Tsunami, it’s fair to say without a hint of doubt that the fish is some of the freshest I’ve ever tasted in sushi and is even served at room temperature; the way it should be. A team of Japanese chefs ensure every item on the Tsunami menu is prepared fresh to order using the best knife skills in the sushi business. A word of warning though – if you’re terrible at making decisions, you’d better call for back up when it comes time to choose what to eat. An extensive menu covering everything you’d expect to see in a Japanese restaurant is present here including sushi and sashimi dishes, sukiyaki, tempura and the latest addition, ishiyaki which consists of meats cooked at your table on a stone grill. In between all this traditional fare there’s also a few eyebrow-raisers such as lamb tetsuya (miso-encrusted French lamb cutlets) and fillet steak for those too afraid to try the Patagonian tooth-fish. If you want my advice though, gorge yourself with traditional Japanese food here and prepare to forever raise your standards. Eating Japanese will never be the same again.
