PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAVisiting the beach is all part of summer for the majority of Perth locals, but with so many pristine beaches to choose from, how does one decide? For me the drawcard usually involves food. That is, I like to visit beaches that have some sort of cafe or restaurant nearby so when hunger strikes, I don’t have far to go to quiet my grumbling belly. At Floreat Beach, The Kiosk is one such spot where you can simply wrap a towel around you and trudge up the sand for a light bite or something a little more substantial. And you don’t even need to put lipstick on or brush your salt-tangled hair! Maximising their 180-degree view of the Indian Ocean, The Kiosk is surrounded by glass, which also acts as a protecting shield from the Fremantle Doctor (Perth’s daily sea breeze).
It’s a very casual affair here with simple furnishings inside and long timber tables outside. Despite its relaxed vibe, the food is better than your average beach shack, starting with daily breakfast. Home-made baked beans, French toast, pancakes and a decent-sized brekky burger are just a few examples of what to expect if you visit before midday, but things get even more exciting after the clock strikes 12. The lunch menu, which also makes an appearance for dinner on Friday and Saturday nights, covers a range of options from light salads, rolls and burgers to more substantial dishes like steaks and seafood. I’m told the pepper speak with pepper mushroom sauce is “killer”, as is the seafood platter for two. My only issue with the seafood platter is that I (along with most people) rarely go to the beach with lots of cash or cards, so at $62, you might need to plan ahead for this one.
