In the past decade, hotels have become more than just a place to get sozzled. Many hotels now offer a variety of themed areas such as a sport’s bar, a gaming section and my favourite – a dedicated restaurant area. Not completely disconnected from the goings on and atmosphere of the hotel, the restaurants are usually a little cleaner and smarter than the rest of the venue and are great for large groups and celebrations. When I visited The Como it was in aid of a friend’s birthday and celebrate we did. The relaxed mood of the seated area meant latecomers weren’t looked down upon and those wanting to enjoy a drink or two could do so with the help of food.

Staff at The Como were pleasant and quick off the mark without making us feel hurried, and unknown menu items were explained without a hint of pretence. The food itself arrived in generous portions, pleasing those with hearty appetites. The pizza fresco, a fresh combination of mixed leaves, cherry tomatoes, shaved parmesan and a drizzle of olive oil, was right on the money as was the massive beef burger. The fun part was watching a fellow diner try and fit their mouth around it! Other menu selections that received the thumbs up from our table include the chermoula barramundi fillet, the lamb medallions and the pork rib-eye with a very interesting balsamic tomato confit. As the majority of our group got stuck into their “liquid desserts” a few of the sweet-tooths among us ordered the real thing in the form of sticky date pudding and New York baked cheesecake. And the verdict? Absolutely delicious!
