Rottnest Island has long been an aquatic playground for Perth locals and tourists alike. Affectionately known as “Rotto”, visiting the carless island is often referred to as “going overseas without needing a passport”. Surrounded by crystal clear waters and white sandy beaches, it’s the perfect place for a day trip or weekend getaway. One of the island’s most iconic establishments, the Quokka Arms, has recently undergone an extensive transformation and name change which has restored the venue to its former historic glory under the new guise of “Hotel Rottnest”.

In addition to refurbished accommodation, the main bar and kitchen have been completely rebuilt, and the courtyard now boasts lavish landscaping and a new island bar. If you’re familiar with Rottnest, you’ll know that dinner is often a disappointing affair as choices are extremely limited. Thankfully Hotel Rottnest provides diners with a variety of offerings which are well-suited to the whole family. You can go as simple or sophisticated as you like with light meals, pizzas and substantial dishes on offer, as well as a kids’ menu for the little ones. Lunchtime might call for a four cheese pizza or Mediterranean meze plate laden with a delicious array of bruschetta, Italian sausage, olives and much more. Or there’s the popular half kilo bucket of king prawns with seafood sauce and warm crusty bread; perfect on a sunny afternoon overlooking Thomson Bay with an icy cold beer. More substantial dishes include the Harvey Scotch fillet steak sandwich, beer battered fish and chips and (for anybody seeking a little extravagance) a whole crayfish with apple and celeriac salad. Hotel Rottnest has injected a welcomed dose of quality food and accommodation to the island.
