PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAOne of the great things about restaurants located within hotels is that they are usually open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. One of the not-so-great things is that they are often well overdue for a modern refurbishment to drag them out of the eighties. Although The Grill has that typical “hotel lobby” look with patterned carpet and matching upholstered chairs, the restaurant is bright, clean and tidy and has gorgeous 12-foot French doors that open out to St Georges Terrace. Where The Grill’s decor may lack a little innovation, the menu certainly makes up for it by offering fine food without a hint of a yawn.
Their a la carte menu features light yet substantial fare such as the spiced tasting plate with duck spring rolls, samosa and Thai curry puffs, or the classic club sandwich. Once the sun sets and the dinner menu makes an appearance, The Grill takes on a more sophisticated feel where food is concerned. Entrees like lemongrass broth with crayfish dumplings and saffron rouille or Spanish Serrano ham with caramelised aniseed myrtle figs, wild rocket and olive salad may cause you to double check which restaurant you’re sitting in. Mains are just as fancy and full of flavour with the pan-fried swordfish, black bean rice noodles, bok choy and Szechuan pepper beurre blanc (yes, all in one dish) delivering a delightful experience for your tastebuds. There’s even a private dining room named “The Cove” should a particular special occasion call for exclusivity. It just goes to show the age-old saying of don’t judge a book by its cover” is certainly well earned in some of Perth’s restaurants.
