This restaurant's unpretentious interior is simply decorated, with a wall of windows maximising views of the beach. The menu is Modern Australian, with the most popular dishes being the oysters and the slow cooked lamb shoulder.

A visit to Cottesloe usually entails some sort of drinking or dining experience, whether it’s a quick drink at the pub, fish and chips on the beach, or a more civilised affair at one of the many eateries. The restaurants and cafes located within this affluent suburb don’t seem to change much and are rarely empty, particularly throughout summer. So when you’re stomach begins to rumble as you lay on the white sandy beach you’ll be glad to know there’s a handful of reliable places to eat at, all within walking distance. The Blue Duck is one such venue, located on the main street with a beachfront vista and very good food. The unpretentious interior is simply decorated and features a wall of windows to maximise views of North Cottesloe Beach. The one thing you don’t want to do here is underestimate the food based on the restaurant’s simple interior.

A strong focus on fresh produce with a menu leaning towards seafood is nothing groundbreaking for a beachside restaurant, but this menu goes above and beyond your standard seafood creations. Take, for instance, the salt and pepper squid served with a salad of Asian sprouts and shoots. If this squid was any more tender, I would honestly doubt it was squid at all – it’s just superb. And the chilli, coriander and lime dressing gives this dish a zing that lingers for just the right amount of time. Then there’s the honey and orange glazed duck with rocket and roasted baby beetroot, beer battered snapper that actually is snapper, and spaghetti with clams and tiger scampi; all stand-out favourites at The Blue Duck. But before you know that the menu changes as frequently as the produce does, so best you discover today’s menu first hand.

We had a breakfast booking for Fathers Day. The service was average so was the food and decor. I expected poached pears with my Fench toast, but it came out of a tin and the marscapone was melted. With this cafe's popularity they can use some money to renew at least the flooring. The location is stunning and the staff friendly.review  04/09/2013
